Have you thought of making your own plant milk at home for a while? I have too. But the thought of soaking nuts overnight and then prepping them simply terrifies me. Who’s got time for that?
When I started to see Oat Milk on the shelves of the grocery store, I started to wonder – is it really made from my beloved oats?
To make creamy dreamy oat milk, you only need 5 ingredients and 10 minutes!
How to Make It Creamy
The ratio is key. For every cup of rolled oats add 3.5 cups water. Any more water and the oat milk will be thinner and not as creamy.
Another key is using rolled oats, not the quick 1 minute or oat flour.
The quick one minute oats and the oat flour have already been pulverized and released their oils, therefore, not making them ideal for making oat milk.
Straining
To make the creamiest oat milk, you only need to strain it with a mesh strainer. There’s no need to use a paper towel or coffee filter. I’m serious.
I tried all the above methods and here’re my findings. Paper towel straining takes forever and results in a very thinned out oat milk. Plus, you’ll have to use almost a whole roll of paper towel!
A coffee filter is a much cleaner method, but it takes a long time. I honestly don’t even know how long it takes because I lost my patience after 10 minutes. Using it will also make very thin oat milk.
The best method was the easiest – strain oat milk with a mesh strainer twice. That’s it!
Do not use paper towel … …or coffee filter!
Customize it
You can also make different variations by adding any of the following:
- Chocolate oat milk by adding a tablespoon of cacao powder.
- Vanilla milk by adding an extra teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- Cinnamon milk by adding a teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
- Pumpkin spice by adding a teaspoon of the pumpkin spice mix.
Uses of Oat Milk
Make the creamiest, homemade oat milk with this easy 10 that you can use in coffee, dessert, oatmeal, smoothies and more!
- 1 cup rolled oats not instant
- 3.5 cups filtered cold/room temp water
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 pitted medjool date
- Pinch of sea salt
-
Combine all ingredients in a blender. If you have a high-speed blender such as Blentec or Vitamix, then blend for 30 seconds. If you’re using a regular blender, blend for 60 seconds.
-
Using a mesh strainer, strain the mixture twice.
-
Store in a glass jar in the fridge for up 5 days.
Note: 1. Do not over blend the oats. The result may be slimy. 2. There’s no need to use a coffee filter, paper towel, or milk bag to strain the mixture. The good old mesh strainer works great. 3. Use oat milk in coffee, with cereal, or smoothies. 4. Mix with cocoa powder to make a chocolate milk or with cinnamon for a spiced version.

So stupid question, you aren’t heating the water at all?
Nara
Hi Lisa – nope, no need to heat the water.

I have a blentec as well and I was wondering what speed you use for this?
Lu
I agree with you, I also very quickly came to conclusion you only need a normal kitchen mesh strainer .. so quick and easy, wish i had started ages ago!

What is blending too much look like? I have a bullet and did 50 sec and after straining 2x there was oat residue left when I poured into container.
