I’ve been making quinoa quite a bit in the past couple of years and this nutritious grain has become a staple in my house. After trying many different cooking methods, I’m sharing the best way to cook quinoa every time in under 15 minutes.

First, pick your quinoa. Some of the popular varieties are white, red, black and tri-color (which is red, black, and white mixed together).

White quinoa has a delicate taste and is very fluffy when cooked. Red and black have a nuttier taste and a little chewier compared to white quinoa.

**This recipe works for all types of quinoa.

STEP 1: Rinse quinoa under cold water for 30 seconds. This is an important step. We need to add some moisture to the grain and rinse off any dirt.

STEP 2: Toast quinoa in a small pan over medium-low heat for approximately 5 minutes, stirring continuously. Toasting quinoa will bring out its aromatic nutty taste.

Don’t forget to stir continuously to prevent quinoa from sticking to the pan.

STEP 3: Add cold water. The rule here is to add water just enough to cover quinoa by about one inch.

STEP 4: Turn heat to medium-high and bring to a boil. This should take about 1-2 minutes.

STEP 5: Cover with a lid, turn heat to low, and simmer for 10 minutes. Resist the temptation to open the lid to check on your quinoa. Lifting the lid makes the steam escape which will mess with cooking time.

After 10 minutes, you should have perfectly cooked quinoa!
