Did you know that tempeh makes an excellent taco “meat”?
To be quite honest – I’m not a fan of tempeh on its own. It doesn’t taste like anything and the texture…well, it’s slimy!
But…you can transfer this baby into something magnificent with just a few simple ingredients!

To make tempeh taco meat, you only need 10 minutes and just a few simple ingredients:
-Olive oil for sautéing
-Tomato paste to add moisture
-Spices for flavor

The first step is to crumble the tempeh. I find it easier to crumble tempeh with my hands. If you prefer, you could also slice it into small squares with a knife.
The second step is to heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
The third step is to cook everything: add tempeh and tomato paste. Stir well to coat tempeh crumbles in tomato paste. Then add all the spices and stir.
I like to mix my spices beforehand in a small mixing bowl. This helps me not burn whatever I’m cooking because I take too long to measure out each spice 😉.

This Tempeh Taco Meat makes perfect meal prep. Use it to to make tacos, burritos, bowls, and salads.
Here are some taco ideas:
–Jalapeno Mango: tempeh taco meat + white onions + mashed avo + jalapeno + mango
–Classic: tempeh taco meat + shredded lettuce + red onions + tomatoes + cilantro + lime wedge
–Vegetal: tempeh taco meat + sautéed red pepper + sautéed onions + cilantro + lime wedge

- 1 block of tempeh, original
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 3 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp water
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsps oregano
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp pepper

Heat a medium non-stick pan over medium heat.

Crumble tempeh with your hands. Alternatively, you can use a knife to slice it into small squares.

Add olive oil into the pan. Add crumbled tempeh and cook for 2 minutes.

Add tomato paste and stir well to evenly coat tempeh crumbles. Add 1 tbsp of water if the mixture is too dry. Water will help break the tomato paste.

Add spices and stir. Turn off the heat.

Store in air-tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
