This Blood Orange Protein Smoothie recipe is packed with vitamin C and the antioxidants to keep you happy and healthy through the cold days!

Blood Orange Protein Smoothie

This Blood Orange Smoothie is my favorite thing to make during the colder months. Just makes your day a little brighter, ya know?

Blood Orange Protein Smoothie

Blood oranges are in their peak season from December through May which is also the peak season for all things citrus.

Wanna know something cool about the blood oranges?

There are three varieties of blood oranges: Moro, Tarocco, and Sanguinello.

Moro

This variety has the most intense flavor and color. Its flavor has
hints of raspberry and is much more intense compared to the regular orange. The Moro is in season from December through March.

Tarocco

Tarocco the most popular orange in Italy. It’s the sweetest out of all three varieties making it the most popular blood orange. It also has the highest concentration of vitamin C of any orange variety grown in the world.

Sanguinello

This variety has reddish skin. Its flesh is orange with multiple blood-colored streaks.

Because blood oranges are high in vitamin C and antioxidants they make perfect winter smoothies. Vitamin C gets you a little bit of mood boost and keeps the cold away.

You can also turn this smoothie into a breakfast smoothie if you add a half cup of oats to it. Or have it as a post-workout smoothie by adding protein powder.

Go with either unflavored or vanilla protein powder – you don’t want something overpowering like mocha to mute the taste of the blood orange.
